Newbury Tip: Abergavenny

The yard trained the runner-up in the race last year. Price too big for this lightly raced hurdler.

With the bookmakers paying five places in the 1.15 Newbury I’m going into battle with a second selection. Quite simply Abergavenny is overpriced.

In five starts over hurdles, he has finished: 11130 with that last defeat excusable as the pace was farcically slow in the Ladbroke at Ascot.

Stablemate Bothy finished second in this race last year and Abergavenny has a very similar profile. Sneaking into the race off bottom weight, Brian Ellison is a master at getting the best out of his horses, especially when it comes to valuable handicaps.

With £8,000 available just for finishing fourth, I expect Felix De Giles will be doing everything possible to get this horse to place, with anything else a bonus. At 25/1 (Bet365) back him each way with ¼ odds for a top five finish.
