Newbury Races Tip: Baby Strange

Baby Strange

Twice the price of the favourite despite a similar level of form. Won this race in 2008.

The 2.35 at Newbury revolves around the favourite Mac’s Power. The way he finished last season he looked like a horse bordering listed class. He showed an impressive turn off foot and if he has progressed over the winter, he could win this easily. There are some chinks in his armour however and he is worth taking on.

Despite the big field there does not seem to be an abundance of pace. That happened once before to Mac’s Power at Doncaster last September, and he was beaten. The horse who triumphed that day was Baby Strange and they re-oppose today.

Baby Strange was one of the few shining lights in a forgettable 2010 for trainer Derek Shaw, winning twice at Doncaster. For a trainer who specialises in the all weather, this horse is unusual. He only broke his duck on the sand in March 2011 at the 18th attempt. The fact he managed a win, over an inadequate five furlongs too, proves he is in good form. To finish victorious when everything is against you is a good sign.

Back on his preferred turf, Baby Strange is looking to repeat a win in the same race of three years ago. Jim Crowley the winning jockey that day is back on board for only the third time since that win. An infrequent rider for the yard, when he is booked by Derek Shaw you should take notice. He has a 14% strike rate and a £16 level stakes profit.

It looks like this race has been targeted for a while and I expect Baby Strange to have the beating of the favourite once again.
