Newbury Tips: Compton
Been racing over 7f & 1m but the way he travels during his races suggests a drop in trip shouldn’t cause a problem.
Robert Cowell has enjoyed tremendous success with his sprinters in recent years and Compton is an interesting debutant for the yard in the 5.15 Newbury.
Although previously campaigned over 7f and a mile he looks the ideal sort to take sprinting. On his last start at Ascot he travelled like the best horse before tiring in the last furlong. That race was over 7f; therefore you suspect he’d be even better at 6f.
Today he drops back to 5f, but the good to soft ground and Newbury’s stiff track means the leaders shouldn’t get away from him. Racing off a mark of 95, he could be a well-handicapped horse and at 8/1 (Bet365) he is the value in the race.
