Longchamp Tips: Monsieur Joe

Record in France is 121. Perfectly drawn and has the pace to lie up with the leaders.

The Prix De L’Abbaye (12.55 Longchamp) is one of my favourite races of the year because it is usually a simple race to solve.

To win the Abbaye you need to have a low draw and plenty of early pace. Gilt Edge Girl and Tangerine Trees both made all from single figure draws to win the last two renewals of the race.

Hamish McGonagall and Inxile will attempt the same tactics from stalls 2 and 4 respectively but they might race each other too hard, setting it up for a horse on their shoulder. Monsieur Joe did just that, winning on his last start at Longchamp, sitting behind Inxile and pouncing in the last 50 yards.

The aptly named Monsieur Joe seems to save his best form for France. His record in the country is 121, his only defeat coming by a short-head.

It is encouraging to see Olivier Peslier keep the ride, as he’s been on board for his last two victories. If the race goes to plan then he should win at 11/1 (William Hill).
