Appleby Can Spring Another Surprise
Trainer won the race last year with an outsider and the favourite might be feeling the effects of a hard race in France
Charlie Appleby pulled off a huge shocked when Charming Thought won last year’s Middle Park Stakes at 22/1 beating odds-on favourite Ivawood into second place and history could be about to repeat itself.
Shalaa is the hot favourite but I wonder how much winning the Prix Morny on very soft ground took out of him? Especially as John Gosden voiced concerns over the going prior to the race.
If Shalaa is below par then Venturous could pick up the pieces. He is the most lightly raced runner in the field and we almost certainly haven’t seen the best of him yet.
He started his career with defeat over 7f at Newmarket but a drop back to 6f has been the making of him.
His pedigree and trainer believe his future lies as a sprinter and he could spring a surprise at 16/1 (BetVictor).
