Kempton Tips: Sulis Minerva

Racing well in a higher grade and Kempton’s long home straight could bring the best out in her.

The 7.30 Kempton is a cracking little sprint, several of the horses arrive in good form, but none better than Sulis Minerva.

Apart from a ninth place finish when she needed the run after a four month break, she’s always finished within 4-lengths of the winner over 6f this winter. That might sound slightly underwhelming but she has been running in class 2 and class 3 handicaps; tougher competition than tonight’s class 4 race.

The last time she raced in this company over 6f, she romped home by three lengths. Interestingly that victory came at Kempton and a return to the venue could prove significant.

Sulis Minerva has a potent finishing kick but she cannot be struck by the whip. On his blog Jeremy Gask writes: ‘So much as a wave of it [the whip] is detrimental to the mare.’

Kempton’s 6f course has a longer home straight than Wolverhampton and Lingfield, which gives Sulis Minerva more time to deploy her final burst. Time she probably needs if the jockey can’t encourage her by traditional methods.

At 9/1 (William Hill) she is overpriced if the track brings out the best in her again.
