Kempton Horse Racing Tips: Diamond Charlie

Kept fresh for a winter campaign, his form looks progressive and he returns to his optimal trip.

The 3.45 at Kempton is an interesting race with a lot of horses running off career high marks. The likes of Estonia and Black Baccara have recent course and distance form but both look quite exposed and have never won at class four level before. The two that interest me are the three-year-olds, What About You and Diamond Charlie.

Having only his 11th start, What About You still has plenty of scope but he is a rather frustrating individual. One good race is immeditaly followed by a bad race. This is his first try at five furlongs and given the short price I can happily avoid him.

Diamond Charlie at 7/1 (Bet365) is a lot more interesting. Again a lightly raced three-year-old, but he does have winning form at five furlongs. Victory was achieved at Epsom, the quickest five furlong track in the country. He clearly has plenty of speed, making Kempton’s sharp five furlong track a good fit for him.

Trainer Simon Dow said this horse has been kept fresh for a winter campaign and I can see why. On his last run he put in a good performance over six furlongs at Kempton; having been settled at the back of the field he made good headway before his run flattened out to finish fifth. That was at class three level and a drop in grade combined with a cut in trip should see him at his best.
