Kempton Tips: Bunbury

Kempton Tips: Bunbury

Carried 10st in maidens but mission accomplished with a mark of 74. Earned an adjusted speed rating of 76 last time when never put into the race.

When Richard Hughes and Shane Kelly set out to win a race they often get the job done and the pair enjoy a 21% strike rate (17-81) together.

Bunbury seems to have been laid out to win a handicap and the assessor might have made a mistake giving him an opening mark of 74.

The 4-year-old has been lumping 10st in maidens so far in his career but has performed well despite the burden. On his race course debut he set an unsustainable gallop over today’s course and distance (97.4% finishing speed) but wasn’t beaten far under the circumstances and earned a useful adjusted rating of 67.

Equally effective on turf, he ran an eye-catching race at Windsor last time. Held-up in rear off a steady gallop he was never put into the race but managed to clock the fastest closing sectional, staying on to finish fifth.

It might have been an exercise in achieving a handicap mark but you can’t fool the clock. The race was won in an impressive time for the grade and Bunbury earned an adjusted speed rating of 76. That should be enough to win the 6.20 Kempton off 74.
