Kempton Racing Tip: Slatey Hen

Unlucky loser when ridden by an inexperienced apprentice. Well drawn and could get a soft lead.

More bottom rung racing in the 7.40 at Kempton and some very peculiar betting. All About You is the 7/2 favourite but he’s having his first start in 425 days and hasn’t won since October 2008. The Racing Post betting forecast him at 25/1 and I cannot understand why the bookmakers have priced him so much shorter.

This opens up value everywhere else and we can take advantage with Slatey Hen at 9/1 with Betfred.

Three runs ago, over course and distance, he looked the most likely winner but Robert Spencer didn’t give him the best of rides. It is hard to be critical of a jockey having only his second start, but he seemed more concerned with his rivals than on riding the finish.

He went straight into my notebook and with the more experienced Martin Harley on board, we can take the plunge. Well drawn in stall two, the horse is versatile enough to make the running if the pace is pedestrian, a likely outcome given the dearth of front-runners in the field.

At Kempton he showed a fair turn of foot to come from last to first before being out battled in the finish. Returned to a class 7 handicap he has a bit more ability than the rest.
