Epsom Tips: Diamond Charlie

The usual pace bias at the track could be negated by the front-runners’ poor draws.

The 6.35 Epsom is what I would call an ‘upside-down’ race. The 5f track has a strong draw bias that favours horses drawn high. It also has a strong pace bias, with front-runners advantaged by the quick track. However, this is one of the rare occasions when all the speedy horses are drawn low – their pace advantage negated by the draw bias.

This perfect storm means the race could set-up for a horse coming from off the pace, a rare occurrence on the 5f track.

If this scenario develops, previous course and distance winner Diamond Charlie could capitalise. This will be the fifth time he has raced on Epsom’s 5f track, which is an advantage in itself, as many horses don’t handle the sharp downhill course.

On Derby day he ran better than the placings suggest when beaten 7-lengths in the Dash. He was badly hampered at the start, losing 3-lengths on the field. On a day when it was difficult to make up ground from off the pace, he did well to finish as close as he did.

He drops down two class levels from that race and if the pace collapses he could pick up the pieces at generous odds of 12/1 (Bet365).
