Epsom Tips: Compton

Improved in each outing so far this year and can fulfil the promise he showed at the backend of last season.

The 5.25 Epsom doesn’t look like the strongest renewal with over half the field more than 10lbs below the handicap ceiling and I expect the better horses to come to the fore.

Compton looks an exciting recruit to the sprinting division after a couple of excellent efforts at Ascot at the backend of last season. The Racing Post awarded him ratings of 100 and 102, which makes him well handicapped racing off a mark of 93.

Having backed him on his first start for Robert Cowell, he ran a disappointing race, finishing 19-lengths behind Heeraat. His owner reported on twitter that he looked backwards in the paddock and would come on for the run.

True to form, he put in an improved effort at York, travelling well before running out of steam in the last furlong. Connections expect him to come on again and that puts him firmly into contention at Epsom.

I can envisage Compton running well in the Wokingham, but he probably won’t get in the race off a mark of 93 and therefore needs a win before Royal Ascot. Epsom fits the bill and at 10/1 (BetVictor) he looks the best bet.
