Chester Tips: Emjayem

Came from a long way back to win at Wolverhampton, covering the final 2f in 22.8s. Showed an excellent turn of foot into a quickening pace.

The facility on the Racing Post website to read trainer comments about their horse can be instructive but also misleading.

After Emjayem’s win at Wolverhampton in August, trainer Ed McMahon was quoted as saying.

“He broke badly. He doesn´t behave well in the stalls and I took a ticket to go in last. They have probably gone too hard in front, which has helped and he is always doing his best work at the finish. He´s been unlucky the last twice.”

I’d agree with the fact he’s been unlucky this season and it is interesting to note his problems in the stalls, something we should factor into the price, however he was wrong in his assertion they went hard up front.

You can understand Ed McMahon’s comments immediately after the race, after a tardy start Emjayem came from six lengths back to reel in the leaders. That would normally suggest a pace collapse of some degree but the overall finishing speed was 101.3%.

That split suggests the leaders went slightly slower than par during the early part of the race and the pack were quickening at the finish.

Emjayem’s finishing speed was 106.6% and he covered the final 2f in a rapid 22.8s.  The 4-year-old showed a great turn off foot to overtake accelerating rivals and that is the sign of a smart horse.

Ed McMahon might be pleasantly surprised in the 4.45 Chester because Emjayem is a useful sprinter and an excellent bet at 10/3 (William Hill).
