WGC Match Play Tips: Zach Johnson

Won three out of a possible four points in last year’s Ryder Cup and a tough competitor.

Zach Johnson might not seem like an obvious match play candidate but he emerged from the Ryder Cup with his reputation enhanced. He was joint-top points scorer for the USA, winning three of his four matches and when his team were imploding on Sunday he beat Graeme McDowell 2&1, to secure his second singles victory in three Ryder Cups.

The one downside is that Zach Johnson’s record at Dove Mountain is uninspiring. He’s gone out in the first round for the last two years, although last year he lost on the 19th hole to eventual winner Hunter Mahan.

The 36-year-old from Iowa might not be the longest on tour, but he is a scrapper and an excellent putter, exactly the sort of player you don’t want to face in match play. At 100/1 (Betfred) he is overpriced and a good each-way bet with ¼ odds paid out if he reaches the semi-finals.
