The world's best golfers go head-to-head in the WGC Match Play Championship this week.

The WGC Match Play is where 64 of the world’s best golfers turn up in the middle of the Arizona desert for a shootout. The rarity of top class match play on the golfing calendar makes it one to savour.

The 64 players are split up into four divisions that the Americans like to call ‘brackets’. It is a straight knockout all the way through with the winners of their bracket moving forward to the semi-finals.

To make a simple process a bit more confusing each ‘bracket’ is named after a golfing legend, so we have the Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Sam Snead brackets. From a betting point of view it provides the option to select a ‘winner’ of each bracket. A printable version is available here.

Rory McIlroy lost in last year’s final to Hunter Mahan, but he continued the good run for Europeans, with six of the last ten finalists coming from Europe. However, the nature of the tournament means each player has to beat their opponent rather than the course, therefore historical trends are almost non-existent.
