Texas Open Tips: Johnson Wagner

Texas Open Tips: Johnson Wagner

Recent results have been underwhelming but his iron play is on-song. Ranked seventh in proximity and ninth for GIRs.

Johnson Wagner has only played three PGA tournaments this year but he’s a proven winner and worth the risk at a crazy price.

The beauty with Wagner is when he gets in contention he wins. He has tasted victory in 3/220 tour starts, a good strike-rate for seemingly a journeyman pro.

The good news doesn’t end there. This season he ranks 7th in proximity to the hole with approach shots, 9th for GIRs and 15th for ball striking. These are the elements you need working at TPC San Antonio and imply he is playing better than results suggest.

The 35-year-old finished T26 last year and T15 in 2011, so he has form at the course and at 500/1 (Stan James) he is a terrific each-way bet with ¼ odds for a top-5 finish.
