Texas Open Tips: Brendan Steele

Record at TPC San Antonio is 1-4-46-MC-8 and recent missed cuts are no cause of concern.

Brendan Steele has become something of an obsession in these columns (along with Trey Mullinax but more on him later!) and after giving him a wide berth for a few tournaments he’s back on my radar.

The 33-year-old has one PGA Tour victory to his name, conveniently at this event in 2011. That might seem like a while back but he’s gone close since and his record at TPC San Antonio is 1-4-46-MC-8.

After a hot start to the season, Steele has cooled off with consecutive missed cuts but Harbour Town was never going to play to the strengths of a man who averages over 300-yards off the tee.

The Texas Open should be more to his liking, his brilliant ball-striking (13th on tour) will keep him in contention on a tough course. He will need to putt better than of late but past results suggest he understands the greens.

The price of Steele is more than reasonable at 66/1 with Stan James going ¼ odds for a top-6 finish.
