Golf Outsider: USPGA Championship

Our longshots expert takes a sideways look at the USPGA Championship and highlights three players to follow at big prices.

The USPGA Championship often produces unlikely winners and it is a good tactic to add some outsiders to your staking plan. Keegan Bradley, YE Yang, Shaun Micheel and Rich Beem are all recent winners who were unfancied by the betting public.

USPGA Selections

Charley Hoffman hasn’t finished better than T27 in a major but for most of this season he’s been threatening a big win. He has five top-10 finishes on tour and was nearly top of the US Open leaderboard before he made a mess of his final hole in the second round. He is a player who makes plenty of birdies and just needs to avoid any disasters.

Matt Jones snuck into the USPGA Championship courtesy of Tiger’s win at Firestone and the in-form Australian could make the most of his reprieve. The 33-year-old has finished T2-T7 in his last two starts, breaking 70 in every round.

Ryan Palmer is a huge price considering he is ranked 15th for adjusted scoring average on tour. The big hitting Texan is a three-time winner and is enjoying another productive season with four top-10 finishes. There is a chance he could overpower Oak Hill and if the putter is hot he will make plenty of birdies.
