Augusta Record: Mediocre for such a top player. A T6 in 2009 is the American’s best result in 11 visits that have included five missed cuts. That said, there is steady overall improvement; a T11 last year made it three top-30 spots in a row.
Form: Has eased his way into action in 2012 after ending last season with neck and shoulder pain that was causing weakness in his left hand. The Masters will be only the second time he has competed in successive events this year. But it’s not all doom and gloom; victory in the Tournament of Champions was one of three top-10s in five outings.
Verdict: Would have been the top ranked American coming to Augusta had Mahan not won last week. A prolific PGA Tour winner in his 40s but his late bloom hasn’t really translated to the majors. A risk even at 55/1.
