Masters Tips: Rory McIlroy

Leads the tour in the three metrics that are key pointers to success at Augusta.

Getting knocked out in the group stages off the WGC Match Play might not seem like ideal preparation for the Masters but it won’t concern Rory McIlroy nor should it his backers. He played well against Soren Kjeldsen but just ran into an inspired opponent – it happens.

More important is the quality of his game over four rounds and we saw at Bay Hill that it is coming to the boil. McIlroy led the field in strokes gained tee-to-green, he also led the driving distance stats and was third for GIRs. His putting was inconsistent but the stroke seems to be getting better.

It’s only a matter of time before McIlroy delivers a world beating performance, so why not at Augusta? He should have one green jacket by now but there is plenty of time and he hasn’t finished outside the top-10 in his last three visits to Augusta.

Our trends analysis suggests scoring average, strokes gained tee to green and strokes gained with approaches are the most important statistics. McIlroy leads the tour in all three metrics. This is his time. Back him at 8/1 with Sky Bet and get 1/4 odds for a top-8 finish.
