4th Apr 2013 | The Masters

US Masters Profiles: Lee Westwood

Westwood: 7 top-3 finishes in majors.

The tag of being one of the best players never to win a major is unwelcome.

Age: 39

World Ranking: 13

Major Wins: 0

Augusta Record: Getting better all the time. A record since 2010 of 2-T11-T3 in Georgia suggests ‘Westy’ is as likely to end his major drought here as anywhere. Last time it was the putter that denied him, he only finished two shots adrift of Watson and Oosthuizen after some fabulous ball-striking.

Form: This time last year he was ranked three in the world, now 13th. But that statistic makes Westwood’s predicament look worse than it is. He has lacked a great tournament in 2013 but still makes the weekends reliably and a T10 at Houston recently suggests he’s not far away.

Verdict: Must get sick of being asked if and when he will end his major drought, so might relish the attention all going on Woods and McIlroy. Of course that will all change if he finds himself at the top of the leaderboard on Sunday so that particular monkey isn’t dismounting his back just yet. Could do it, but then again, we’ve been saying that for years.
