Mickelson Heads Masters Betting

phil mickelson

By winning the Houston Open, Phil Mickelson has confirmed himself as outright favourite for the first major of the season.

Four days ago, the bookmakers could not agree on whom to make favourite for the US Masters. Now everyone agrees. At 7/1, Phil Mickelson heads the betting after sealing a three shot win at the Houston Open. The new world number three confirmed his third round 63 was not a flash in the pan as he followed it up with a final day 65.

This was a timely return to form as far as Mickelson’s followers were concerned, it was not such good news for Stan James. The Gibraltar based bookmaker has promised to refund all losing outright bets if Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson wins the Masters.

The leading British hope is last year’s runner up Lee Westwood. Rated 16/1 third favourite, the world number two finished tied-30th in Houston with a closing 68 to give him confidence going to Augusta.

Other notable players who had a good weekend were Steve Stricker and Padraig Harrington. Previously 66/1 chances to wear the green jacket; they are both available at 50/1 after top ten finishes.
