Golf Outsider: Joburg Open

Our long shots expert highlights three big priced South Africans to look out for on home turf.

The European Tour visits Royal Johannesburg & Kensington GC for the Joburg Open, an event co-sanctioned with the Sunshine Tour. The leaderboard is often dominated by home-grown players, but in search of value I’ve gone for three South Africans that aren’t household names.

Joburg Open Selections

Trevor Fisher Jnr is a six-time winner on the Sunshine Tour, with three of those victories coming in 2012. He is a player in form and has enjoyed good results at the Joburg Open. He finished T3 last year, only three shots behind the winner, Branden Grace.
Recommended Bet: Trevor Fisher Jnr at 180.0 (Betfair)

MJ Daffue might be an unfamiliar name but the 24-year-old is full of potential. A former collegiate player in the United States, he enjoyed an excellent 2012, winning numerous individual titles.  On his return to South Africa in January, he gained his Sunshine Tour card at Q-School. After a sizzling opening round of 63, he kept his nerve to finish third. That good form continued in his first tournament, where he finished T4 at the Telkom Pro-Am.
Recommended Bet: MJ Daffue at 750.0 (Betfair)

Desvonde Botes might be considering somewhat of a journeyman on the Sunshine Tour but he arrives in good form after a T8 at the Telkom Pro-Am. Last year he was in contention at the Joburg Open after starting with rounds of 65-69.  He faded over the weekend but shouldn’t be written off at a huge price.
Recommended Bet: Desvonde Botes at 1000.0 (Betfair)
