Farmers Insurance Open Golf Tips: Nick Watney

Fabulous course record

Four top-10s in the last five years here, including victory in 2009, rightly makes him the hot favourite.

Nick Watney enjoyed a sensational 2011. With 10 top-10s from 22 starts he was one of the most consistent players on tour. A four-time winner, he also knows how to get over the line.

The Farmers Insurance Open might be his first proper tournament of the year but it is also one of his best. His record in the last five seasons is: T6-T9-1-MC-T9. Watney hits the ball a long way, putts well and makes a tonne of birdies. It is no wonder he finished top of the FedEx Cup during the regular season.

Last year Watney got to within a shot of the course record on Torrey Pines South. A final round 63, was the best of the week but he was too far behind to contend. Three opening rounds where he could not break 30 putts tells the story.

If the 2009 champion gets the flat stick working earlier, he has an excellent chance of starting his season with a win at 16/1 with Coral.
