Farmers Insurance Open Tips: Josh Teater

Played the Farmers three times, always making the weekend. His ability to play the par 5s well is a big plus.

Josh Teater missed the cut at the Humana Challenge last week but I wouldn’t pay too much attention to a tournament that can throw up some odd results. A first round 73 was full of missed opportunities and when everyone else is shooting in the low-60s, an average round becomes a bad score. Nevertheless, a second-round 65 showed his game was still in pretty good shape.

At the Farmers Insurance Open, birdies will be much harder to come by and that could suit the 33-year-old. As discussed in our trends article, Torrey Pines South is a particularly long golf course where you need to make your score on the par 5s. This should not be a problem for Teater as he ranked 7th for the par 5 birdie or better metric last season.

This will be the fourth year Teater’s played at Torrey Pines and although he has finished no higher than T54, he’s always made the cut. That experience could prove invaluable because he has the game to contend. At 150/1 (Boylesports) he is overpriced, with ¼ odds for a top-5 finish.
