BMW Championship Tips: Steve Stricker

Don’t be distracted by his reduced schedule, he’s enjoyed another stellar year with six top-10 finishes.

On this side of the Atlantic, the FedEx Cup is viewed as something of a gimmick. Designed to keep interest going until the end of the season, watching already wealthy golfers shooting for an additional $10million is slightly vulgar.

Putting the moralities aside, we can use the FedEx Cup to our advantage. Henrik Stenson currently leads the standings on 4,051 points but there is an inherent bias.

The more tournaments you play the more points you can earn. I prefer to use a points per tournament metric, it means players with a lighter schedule aren’t disadvantaged and you get a truer measure of performance.

The betting for the BMW Championship reflects our table, with Woods, Stenson and Scott in the top three for both. The first anomaly is Steve Stricker.

The 46-year-old has a reduced schedule this year but is still playing terrific golf. He has six top-10 finishes from 11 starts and has been runner-up three times.

Earning an average of 238 FedEx Cup points per tournament he is 60 points clear of Justin Rose and only 50 points behind Tiger Woods.

I make him 16/1 fourth favourite instead of Phil Mickelson and therefore at 22/1 (Boylesports) he is a good each-way bet with ¼ odds for a top-5 finish.
