AT&T Pebble Beach Tip: Brendan Steele

Nerves of Steele

Hit form last weekend at Scottsdale closing with a 64. Price too big for a player who led last year’s PGA Championship after three rounds.

It was heartening to see Kyle Stanley bounce back from heartbreak at the Farmers Insurance Open as it proved in the game of golf there is always an opportunity for redemption. Spencer Levin will be hoping his turn comes around equally quickly.

Brendan Steele knows how this feels; a catastrophic final round of 77 saw him drop from 1st to 19th in last year’s PGA Championship. It was a hard lesson but one that will serve him well.

What it shouldn’t do is detract from an otherwise fantastic rookie season. He scored his maiden tour victory at the Valero Texas Open in April and finished the season 52nd in the FedEx Cup standings.

After a quiet start to 2012, a final round 64 in the Phoenix Open showed that Steele was back to his best as he surged to a T5 finish at Scottsdale. A fine driver of the ball, with a good all-round game, there is no reason why he cannot carry this form to Pebble Beach.

Part of Phil Mickelson’s inner circle, Steele is certain to have picked up some tips on how to play the course from the three-time winner. At 100/1 with BetVictor he looks excellent value. Back him each way with ¼ odds for a top five finish.
