United Open Door For Rivals

Sir Alex

After dropping points at St. James’ Park, the title race can be reignited if Chelsea and Arsenal capitalise on their games in hand.

Two days ago, Carlo Ancelotti conceded the Premier League. Without playing a game Chelsea have been cut to 10/1, from 14/1, for the title. The Italian’s masterly use of reverse psychology cannot take all the credit, with leaders United unexpectedly dropping two points at St. James’ Park. Arsenal were the prime benefactors and are now 15/2, from 10/1 to finish the season as champions.

On Wednesday night the chasing pack have the opportunity to close the gap in their must win games. Chelsea host Birmingham at Stamford Bridge and are 2/9 to move within six points of United. Arsenal have the tricky prospect of a North London derby and are 8/5 to leave White Hart Lane with a win and reduce the deficit to four points.

Whilst destiny is in his own hands Sir Alex Ferguson will not be unduly concerned. Nevertheless, with league games against his nearest title rivals still to come, he will be hoping results do not go their way. After exiting the FA Cup at the weekend United are 8/1 to finish the season without any trophies.
