Reading v Wigan Tip: Wigan to win

Reading’s upturn is based on an unsustainable goals to shots ratio. They could come unstuck against a Wigan team finding their stride.

A couple of weeks ago we wrote a feature detailing Reading’s remarkable ability to convert their chances into goals. In their last four games the Royals have scored 7 times from just 9 shots on target, that is a 78% strike rate, whereas the Premier League average is a more moderate 28%.

Quite simply this run cannot continue. Reading have done phenomenally well to give themselves a chance of avoiding relegation but the reality is they’ve overachieved in the last couple of months.

On Saturday they host Wigan in the archetypal ‘six-pointer’, the type of game Roberto Martinez is accustomed to winning to keep his side in the Premier League.

Last Sunday, Wigan impressed in a 4-1 victory over Huddersfield, in a match many earmarked as a potential upset. Well versed in relegation scraps, this is the time of year when Wigan get motoring and at 2/1 (Stan James) they can start to secure their Premier League status with victory over Reading.
