Good Fortune Favours Sherwood

Tim Sherwood has enjoyed a good start to his managerial career as results have outstripped performance.

Tim Sherwood’s appointment as Tottenham’s new head coach came as a surprise to many. His lack of managerial experience at the top level was a concern, not helped by his penchant for ‘old-fashioned’ tactics and a 4-4-2 formation.

Five wins in six games has silenced many of the doubters but does this make Sherwood the right appointment?

Only time will tell but at the moment he has one quality in abundance – luck.

We have recalculated the last eight rounds of Premier League matches using shots on target as a proxy. On average a goal is scored for every three shots on target and from here we can extrapolate a theoretical scoreline based on performance.

Using this metric we see Tottenham are gearing up for a fall. Spurs are ‘out-shooting’ their opposition by less than one shot on target per game. This number becomes negative if you include the AVB managed performances against Sunderland and Liverpool.

If we look beyond the bare results we find Tottenham in a false position in the ‘form league’ - expect this to be corrected in the coming weeks.
