Chelsea v Liverpool

Torres: Happy in Red not so long ago

Fernando Torres has another chance to cast off some demons by scoring against his old club.

This is a fixture that has rarely sparkled in recent years with just nine goals scored in the last eight games meetings at Stamford Bridge. Furthermore, at least one of the sides has kept a clean sheet in all but one of their previous 11 league clashes. In other words, don’t expect a goal-fest. Bet365 offer us some fine value on this trend continuing; fewer than two goals in the match is a 11/4 shot.

Chelsea aren’t really playing with a flourish lately. Conceding five times at home to Arsenal had a chastening effect and encouraged Andre-Villas Boas to apply the shackles a little more. Just one goal was subsequently mustered against both Genk and Blackburn; the young boss will have been encouraged by the clean sheet at Ewood Park though.

Liverpool are also going through a bit of a blip. The last two Anfield games have been frustrating with a 1-1 draw with Norwich being followed by a goalless encounter against Swansea. Luis Suarez has four league goals this campaign, but three of those came from the penalty spot. There must be concerns that the Argentinian isn’t scoring freely from open play. Throw in his FA charge concerning alleged racial abuse of Patrice Evra and a long midweek trip back from South America, and it doesn’t look promising.

To make matters worse, nobody else in the Liverpool squad has scored more than two league goals. Andy Carroll has work to do just to start matches regularly. Of course, the same can be said of Chelsea’s big money signing from the Reds - Fernando Torres. The Spanish striker is still coming in for plenty of criticism and he looks a long way from firing on all cylinders. All and all, another low scoring encounter looks on the cards on Sunday afternoon.
