Champions League Preview

The bookies are confident that Chelsea, Man Utd, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich will progress to the last eight. But two of the ties are still level after the first legs.

Chelsea look like they only have to go through the motions at Stamford Bridge with most bookies making them untouchable at 1/100 to knock out Copenhagen, after winning 0-2 in Denmark. Manchester United are hotly fancied to progress themselves at 4/11, and this in a tie they are yet to score in.

At 0-0, Marseilles would probably only need one away goal to really put the cat amongst the pigeons at Old Trafford, but they are 5/2 with Coral to make the last eight. These odds appear short in comparison to the 7/1 available for an away win on the night, proving that the greatest danger to United is surely a score draw - that’s a 5/1 shot with StanJames.

With their result seemingly in the bag, Chelsea fans will be desperately hoping this is the night when Torres finally breaks his duck. He’s 10/3 to be first goalscorer with Drogba at 15/4 with Bet365. Anelka may provide the best value at 5/1 having scored twice in the first leg. As always, much will depend on Ancelotti’s team selection and chosen formation.

The other Tuesday night fixture in the Champions League could signal the departure of the defending champions. Inter Milan trail Bayern Munich 1-0 and head to Germany as 7/2 shots to turn it around and progress.

The following night Real Madrid hope to show their class at the Bernabeau where they entertain Lyon with the match poised at 1-1. Mourinho’s side looked like they might be home and hosed late in the first leg when they led 1-0 through Benzema. However, a Gomis equaliser after 83 minutes kept Lyon’s hopes alive. The bookies suggest that goal will have minimal impact with the French side priced at 4/1 to cause a major upset and dump out Madrid, who are 1/5 to make the quarters.
