York Tips: Humidor

A previous Listed winner over 5f, he looks much more a 6f horse nowadays. Badly hampered at Ayr last time but has shaped well on his last two starts.

The 3.30 York is a terrific sprint handicap packed full of good horses but the bookmakers have been too quick to dismiss the chances of Humidor.

Once rated as high as 109 and a previous Listed winner he is now 10lbs below his peak and starting to look well handicapped. Most of his wins have come over the minimum trip but the way he’s been running this season an easy 6f looks ideal.

Two starts back at Leicester he was badly outpaced over 5f but he finished the race better than anyone, making up four lengths on the leader in the last two furlongs. To put it into context his final 2f fraction was quicker than runner-up Rocky Ground, who went on to win his next start.

Humidor backed up his performance with a good run over 6f in the Ayr Gold Cup; he was one of the last horses off the bridle and would have gone close to winning but didn’t get the gaps in what turned into a messy race.

Soft ground won’t be a hindrance and although a wide draw in stall 20 could be problematic it should give Thomas Brown a clear run to the line. At 25/1 (Boylesports) he can spring a surprise.
