Windsor Tips: Novellen Lad

Will relish the fast ground and this looks a stepping-stone onto better things at Royal Ascot.

Recent warm weather has seen going reports return to more recognisable descriptions, with the 7.10 Windsor racing on ground described as good to firm.

This is good news for Novellen Lad as his record on good to firm is 6/20 compared to 0/11 on anything softer. Last year was a washout for the horse as he rarely got his favoured ground; he did well to finish third over course and distance on good to soft.

Although this is his first race in 107 days, I am not put off by the absence. Six of his seven career wins have come in May and June and he is always better at the start of the season.

Willie Musson was targeting the Wokingham at Royal Ascot last year and that looks the plan again. Last year required a handicap rating of 96 to make the race, therefore Novellen Lad needs at least one win, as his current mark of 88 is too low.

The plan looks straightforward. Win this race, then go to Royal Ascot. His trainer obviously thinks he is good enough and at 10/1 (Betfred) I’m happy to agree.
