St. Leger Festival Day Four

Blue Bunting triple G1 winner

There are four televised races from Doncaster including the final classic of the season, the Group 1 Ladbrokes St. Leger.

The official going has changed to good to firm and that is consistent with the going stick readings and the times clocked on the course.

2.05 Champagne Stakes Group 2 7f

Only five runners for this juvenile contest, which could make it a tactical affair. Entifaadha is the 5/4 favourite (Victor Chandler) after his Group Three win at York. Unbeaten in his young career, he sets the standard. Red Duke at 5/2 (Bet365) is also a Group winner and was unlucky not to land the hat-trick last time when hampered. Having only his second start Daddy Longlegs might be worth a chance at 11/2 (Boylesports). He could be anything, but hailing from the Aiden O’Brien yard he is probably very good.

2.35 Portland Handicap – 5f140y

Wokingham runner-up Waffle at 10/1 (William Hill) has seen plenty of support. The intermediate sprint distance and strong pace should suit him perfectly, but 1 win from 17 races is a worry. Zero Money is on the upgrade, winner of his last two starts he looks the most likely winner at 15/2 (Victor Chandler).

3.10 St. Leger Group 1 – 1m6f132

A fascinating race where you could make a case for any of the front six in the betting. First off I’d question the form of the Great Voltigeur at York. In a stop-start race Sea Moon powered clear to win by eight lengths but the time was less than impressive. This is his first race on anything firmer than good. At 2/1 (Stan James) he is short enough in the betting. Blue Bunting at 7/2 (Betfred) offers value, she should be favourite. A triple Group One winner this season, she has stamina, class and proven it time again.

Of the outsiders Michael Owen’s Brown Panther at 14/1 (Ladbrokes) could be the best bet. Connections are saying that his Newbury defeat was excusable as he wasn’t race fit, using it as a stepping stone to the St. Leger. If he recreates his Royal Ascot form then he is capable of winning.

3.45 Class 2 Handicap – 1m
A tricky looking handicap to finish. Eton Forever was a clear winner over course and distance at the start of the year. Beating Dance And Dance by almost four lengths is excellent form. He’s done nothing wrong since and looks a good bet at 4/1 (Bet365).
