Southwell Tips: Woolfall Sovereign

Beaten by the draw last time he raced at Southwell but this time he’s bagged the prime starting spot.

Having watched the action unfold at Southwell on Tuesday I’m now convinced you need to be drawn in the centre of the track on the five furlong course.

Track maintenance means the bias has (and probably will) vary but at the moment we are seeing the return of the ‘traditional’ Southwell bias.

Numbers indicate position of stall away from nearside rail (stalls placed high).

Historically the best place to be is seven off the rail, meanwhile the four stalls positioned nearest the rail have only bean 40% of rivals over the past five seasons.

As luck would have it, the horse I want to back in the 1.50 Southwell is draw seven (-7) off the rail, in stall 4.

Woolfall Sovereign doesn’t stand much racing on account of bad feet but he still warrants plenty of respect on the all-weather.

He is a previous course and distance winner and ran a cracking race when third behind Silken Express last January.

Woolfall Sovereign had an impossible task from the highest stall but he was only beaten by 2.75 lengths.

He is 4lbs better off with Even Stevens this time round and with a good record fresh he is overpriced at 12/1 (Bet365)
