Southwell Tips: Tamino

Raced on Tuesday and showed his customary early dash but finished the race well against stronger opposition.

There are some serial losers in the 2.50 Southwell who look poor bets: Young Simon, Takajan, Flow Chart and Moremaloke have 6 wins from 131 races, for a combined 4.6% strike rate. These infrequent winners are passed over.

Tawseef, Only Ten Percent and Sabys Gem are maidens and although they are lightly raced, 25 combined starts, they have not shown much sparkle to date.

Indian Dumaani had very moderate form in Italy and has struggling since moving to the UK. Whilst Bonnie Prince Blue looks to have fallen out of love with the game and is badly outpaced during his races.

That leaves us with Gracie’s Gift and Tamino.

Gracie’s Gift seems to have lost his form; he has finished well down the field on his last two starts without excuses. The obvious bet therefore is Tamino. We saw him on the track only two days ago but he has run well previously without a break so that isn’t a concern.

A one-dimensional front-runner, he showed good pace in a better race on Tuesday. I was particularly impressed that once headed he stuck to his guns. He could easily have thrown in the towel and been beaten by 10 lengths but he finished only 3.5 lengths behind the useful Elhamri.

With very little pace in the race and against some horses with questionable attitudes he could make all. Leonna Mayor claims a useful 7lbs and has a 50% strike rate (2-4) for the owners. At 10/1 (William Hill) he is a great bet in a weak race.
