Southwell Tips: Take Cover

Enjoys a 100% record at the track from three starts and takes a big drop in class from the weekend.

After running no sort of race in a Listed contest at Doncaster, I’m giving Take Cover a second chance in the 3.20 Southwell. Although he was beaten a massive 23 lengths I am certain that wasn’t his true running. He pulled very hard through the early stages of the race, something he also did at Kempton, expending too much energy.

A strong gallop might be essential for this horse until he learns to settle and therefore a return to Southwell is a logical step. The speed favouring nature of the track means there is almost always a generous early pace. The fibresand surface also suits the horse, as he is 3/3 at the track.

Returning to a class 4 handicap, three levels lower than Saturday, he races amongst horses with more moderate ability and I’d be surprised if he wasn’t able to win at 9/2 (Betfred).
