Southwell Horse Racing Tips: Steel City Boy

Had excuses on his last two starts. Before that he had looked an unlucky loser when doing best of those drawn on the wrong side at Nottingham.

The 2.35 Southwell isn’t the best race but it is quite straight forward. Most of these horses have a terrible record and struggle to win any sort of race. In terms of attitude there are only three that know how to score with any sort of regularity:

Steel City Boy: 8 wins from 96 starts
The Jailer: 7 wins from 62 starts
Argentine: 7 wins from 65 starts

The Rest: 7 wins from 166 starts

With Argentine declared a non-runner, the choice is whittled down to two with Steel City Boy the value at 25/1 (Ladbrokes).

On the face of it he looks out of form but his last two runs are excusable.  Six furlongs at Southwell was a trip that stretched his stamina, so it is good to see him revert to the minimum trip where his record is much better.

Five furlongs: 6 wins from 57 races = 10.5% strike rate
Six furlongs: 3 wins from 39 races = 5.1% strike rate

His last run over five can also be passed over as he had the outside draw at Kempton. Three runs ago he managed to finish fourth behind Cape Royal and was the highest finisher of the horses drawn high. If he returns to that level then the 25/1 with Ladbrokes could look very big.
