Southwell Horse Racing Tips: Even Stevens

Four wins from four at course and distance. Has the best form and speed ratings in the field.

It is slightly disappointing to see that after Southwell have gone to the effort of staging a valuable sprint handicap it hasn’t attracted the calibre of horses it should. We are in the strange position that seven of the ten horses in the 2.50 at Southwell are racing from out of the handicap.

With £10,000 to the winner, £3,000 for second and £1,500 for third place I can see why trainers have upped their horses in grade. Finishing in the places is almost as valuable as winning a class four handicap. The result is we have many who are unproven under the conditions, chancing their arm.

The only horses of interest are Cadeaux Pearl and Even Stevens, largely because they have won over course and distance before. Of the Scott Dixon pair, Even Stevens holds the strongest claims.

He is one of the few in the handicap proper, no surprise considering he is 4/4 when racing over course and distance. He also has the best form in the book, taking a competitive class 3 handicap on New Year’s Day.

His speed ratings are far superior to any of his rivals and it would be a massive surprise if he didn’t win the race. At 7/4 (Boylesports) he is worth a bet as he is a cut above his rivals.
