Southwell Tips: Putin
Recorded a good speed rating when last tried at 5f and he handles the fibresand surface.
The 5.20 Southwell is a weak looking race and I’m surprised Putin isn’t favourite.
I wouldn’t judge him too harshly on his last run, he was outclassed in the Blue Square Sprint Series final and a slow start didn’t help either, but the fact he made the final is encouraging enough.
On his penultimate start he ran a good race to finish fourth behind M J Woodward at Southwell. He was the only horse to take on the winner and that probably cost him second place.
He handles the fibresand surface but the step down in trip to 5f is the big positive. He’s only raced once over the minimum distance this winter but he earned his best ever speed rating when finishing third to Charming at Lingfield.
Completely unexposed at the trip, he is the value in the race at 13/2 (Paddy Power).
