Southwell Racing Tips: Mount Hollow

Placed in each of his last five outings including a miraculous second at Bath when he looked like being tailed off.

Connections with horses running in the 12.10 at Southwell must be cursing their luck at ending up in the much harder division of this six furlong handicap sprint. There are at least five horses with a good chance of winning the prize but at the current odds only Mount Hollow is value.

The six-year-old joined Reg Hollinshead at the start of the year but in the last three months he has really hit form finishing 11322 on his last five starts. The improvement coincided with the application of cheek pieces and today an eye-shield is fitted with hope of further improvement.

On his current form I don’t think he has much to find. Last time out he was hampered coming out of the gates and trailed the field by three lengths when rounding the turn. He put in a remarkable run to overtake the field in the home straight but couldn’t quite reel in the leader. Considering it was a handicap he did well to make up so much ground.

Although this is his first run on the fibresand, his pedigree suggests he should handle it and his yard frequently perform well with their Southwell runners. He is a strong travelling type and should relish the galloping nature of the track. At 10/1 (Boylesports) he is the best bet in a competitive race.
