Southwell Tips: Mazovian

Recent turf form is easily ignored. A Southwell specialist, his extra stamina could give him the edge in a strongly run race.

The bookmakers have made the classic mistake of pricing up an all-weather specialist on his turf form. Mazovian has been well beaten in his last five starts, all on grass, but he returns to his beloved fibresand in the 4.15 Southwell.

He enjoyed a productive winter, winning twice at Southwell both in class 5 handicaps, the same grade that he races in today. He should have no problem handling the surface or the opposition.

The biggest positive is his winning form at 7f. There is plenty of speed in today’s race and unusually for Southwell it could setup for something coming from off the pace. Apart from Mazovian, only Punching has won beyond 6f and that was back in 2009.

Stamina could give Mazovian the edge, making him overpriced at 18/1 with Bet365.
