Southwell Tips: Lenny Bee

Runs well on the fibresand and can score if avoiding a duel for the lead.

The 6.50 Southwell is a fascinating sprint and like most races at the track, it lends itself to course specialists.

Lenny Bee might not have a win next to his name but he’s always run well on the fibresand. His last start at Southwell was in December 2011 when he finished a close 4th after chasing a blistering early gallop. It was a similar story on 10 November 2011, when he tired in the last 100 yards after chasing a strong pace.

Races at Southwell are generally run at a solid gallop but Lenny Bee has been unlucky to compete in races where the pace has collapsed. According to my sectional timings both races he lost had amongst the quickest first 3 furlongs run at the track in the last three years.

In a big field there is a danger they will go too quick again, but if they jockeys judge the pace correctly then Lenny Bee is plenty good enough to win the race. He competes off a career low mark and ran a good race behind the progressive Bondi Beach Boy on his last start.
