Southwell Tips: Karam Albaari

Matched Hussar Ballad’s final 3f sectional when they met 10 days ago. A stronger pace and a 7lb pull in the weights can produce a different result.

Races at Southwell are typically strong-paced affairs, with the Fibresand surface suited to galloping front-runners but Karam Albaari was defeated on his last start in an unusually sedate affair.

Hussar Ballad, who he re-opposes with in the 12.50 Southwell, set a steady gallop on the 27 December, which resulted in a final 3f finishing speed 109.8% of the overall speed.

At the front on the pack, Hussar Ballad steadily increased the tempo four furlongs from home and never saw another rival. Karam Albaari covered the final 3f in the same time as Hussar Ballad but he started five lengths in arrears and couldn’t bridge the gap.

With a stronger pace and a 7lbs pull in the weights, Karam Albaari can turn the tables on the favourite. Adam Kirby is an eye-catching booking and John Jenkins has a strike rate at Southwell, which is double his record at the other all-weather venues.
