Southwell Horse Racing Tips: Defence Council

Ran a fine race in defeat last time out. That run was after a long break, should strip fitter and enjoy the slight ease in grade.

When Elna Bright was a winning tip for this column just over two weeks ago, I revelled in watching the replay of the race repeatedly. In the few moments spent not massaging my ego I did notice what an excellent race Defence Council ran in defeat.

Having his first race after a 138-day break, he raced much closer to the breakneck gallop than expected and made what looked like a winning move around the bend. A combination of fitness, the overly strong gallop and the trip saw his stamina give way as he was collared on the line. Good news for Elna Bright fans, but in hindsight Defence Council ran the better race.

A drop back to five furlongs is logical, it is a trip he has won at before, but his first run on fibresand (1.30 Southwell) is more of an unknown. Mel Brittain allays my fears over the surface, the Yorkshire based trainer has more runners at Southwell than anywhere else and they tend to be successful.

The horse is clearly up to the grade and I’m happy to take on the small risk of the trip and surface in return for the 15/2 on offer with Victor Chandler.
