Southwell Tips: Coach Montana

Collared on the line after a bold front-running performance last time out. Running style ideal for Southwell.

Amenable is the paper favourite for the 5.30 Southwell because he races off a 12lb lower mark than he would on turf. It was the same story last autumn and he was unable to win.

The horse that caught my eye, albeit 79 days ago, is Coach Montana.

He tried to make all over 7f at Wolverhampton and almost succeeded. He was caught in the dying strides and lost by a short-head but it was a moral victory because his jockey got the sectionals slightly wrong. His finishing speed of 97.6% was below par, meaning he was slowing down in the final two furlongs.

That kind of front-running performance is ideally suited to the Fibresand and he ran well on his last visit to Southwell.

He should have the pace to take a prominent position despite the drop in trip and his extra stamina should help him see off short runners like Pearl Noir.
