Southwell Horse Racing Tips: Clear Ice

Loves the track, down in trip and blinker back on.

Ghostwing is a very short price in the 3.00 at Southwell and is a favourite that needs to be taken on. Without a win since May 2010, he has become a frustrating horse; a good run is invariably followed by a bad run. I can’t help feeling he was flattered by overtaking some tiring horses last time out, he was badly outpaced early in the race and if the same happens again I can’t see him winning.

At much bigger odds, Clear Ice is interesting at 12/1 (Ladbrokes). His record at Southwell is excellent; from 15 runs he has 3 wins and 9 placed efforts, the fibresand clearly suits him. The move to Gay Kelleway in the summer has also improved the horse. Previously he had struggled to get his head in front but he has won two races for his new trainer, including a valuable class four sprint at Brighton.

He returned to racing last week after a two-month break and was only beaten 3.75 lengths. It was a highly creditable effort as it was over six furlongs and the headgear was left off. Today he drops back in trip, races on his favourite track and the blinkers are reapplied. If these factors see him return to his summer form then he will be too good for the opposition.
