Southwell Horse Racing Tips: Brio

Got involved in a sustained pace duel last time out over a trip that stretches his stamina. Drops back to sprinting with a possible uncontested lead today.

Brio who runs in the 12.50 at Southwell is closely matched with my other tip Suddenly Susan in the first division at 12.20. It could be a day of feast or famine, but if my speed ratings are correct then it is worth the risk.

Both horses raced on the 2nd August over course and distance. Suddenly Susan finished three lengths ahead of Brio but the field behind them was well strung out. They showed strong early pace, which is an advantage at Southwell, and dominated the race to finish 1-2 in quick times.

Brio advertised his well-being with a good sixth last week. Although beaten by 8.75 lengths it was a competitive claiming race. The horses that finished in front were all rated above 70; he won’t be facing that level of competition in today’s 0-65 handicap.

The other plus is today’s distance of six furlongs. Last time out Brio was involved in a protracted duel for the lead with Golden Creek. Both horses were never going to get home over seven furlongs at the pace they were running, but Brio still finished four lengths ahead of his front-running rival.

Dropped back in trip, against easier opposition, Shane Kelly should be able to dominate the race. At 13/2 with Victor Chandler we have another good bet.
