Southwell Tips: Bookiesindex Boy

There could be a pace collapse which gifts this mercurial performer the race.

The 1.30 at Southwell should be run at a tremendous gallop, with Spic’n’ Span and La Capriosa real speedballs. This could set up for Bookiesindex Boy to come from off the pace to win.

Those unfamiliar with John Jenkins’s eight-year-old need to be aware of his quirks. He is a horse who famously travels well in his races but as soon as he comes off the bridle, he finds nothing. Too long in the tooth to change his ways, when push comes to shove it is game over.

That does not mean he isn’t talented. He has finished in the top-three in 7 of his 19 races at Southwell and has also won in a higher grade. To be fully effective he needs a strong pace and for the field to come back to him at the finish, as he won’t battle past his rivals. Looking at the line-up this could be the scenario today.

Stephen Craine takes the ride, which is a huge positive. He has been onboard for Bookiesindex Boy’s last two victories and knows the horse inside out, including his peculiar racing style. At 8/1 (Betfred) he has a better chance than the odds suggest.
