St James’s Palace Stakes Tips: Dawn Approach
Best to focus on his Guineas win rather than the Derby disaster. Plus we get our money back if Toronado finishes in the frame.
The St James’s Palace Stakes (3.45 Ascot) is a fascinating race because it gives Dawn Approach a quick opportunity to put his Derby nightmare behind him.
There has been plenty of speculation about the possible cause of his poor run but it was such a bad performance I am happy to treat it as a one off. Back over his optimal trip of a mile he still looks the most likely winner.

Dawn Approach’s 2000 Guineas win is still the strongest form in the field, Magician and Toronado have got close, but their best is still several pounds short of Dawn Approach’s RPR of 127.
The one potential improver is Toronado, connections were disappointed by his run in the Guineas and like Dawn Approach he should be forgiven one poor performance.
